The RBI expects banks in India to complete KYC formalities. This guideline ensures record maintenance of all the account holders. Almost all banks ask for standard information like your full name, address, and identity proof for the same. An additional requirement is your contact number. This is termed as your "registered mobile number". Banks use it to give you access to services through the Banking App.

They also use it to send you important updates. Hence, linking your mobile number is an important part of the account opening process.

Why do banks ask you to link your number to your Bank Account?

Banks often request linking your phone number to your account for security purposes and to facilitate communication. It allows them to send alerts for suspicious activities, transaction confirmations, and important updates. Also, it facilitates two-factor authentication, enhancing the security of your bank account. This involves requiring both a password and a code sent to your phone, offering an extra layer of protection.

How to link your number?

Even with longstanding Bank Accounts, banks still require linking your phone number. Luckily, this can be done without visiting a branch. The most convenient approach is online, allowing you to effortlessly meet the requirements digitally. Banks activate your Net Banking after account opening. If not, you can do it by registering on their official website or app. Once done, follow the steps listed to link the phone number with the Bank Account:

  1. Log in to your Net Banking Account with the help of your username and password.
  2. Go to the 'My Profile' or 'My Account' section. You will find a 'contact number' tab after opening it. If you own multiple Bank Accounts, choose the one that requires linking.
  3. After selection, you get prompted to complete an additional layer of authentication. You do this by entering a password or PIN. This will help you link your mobile number to your Bank Account. The authentication process may be different based on your banking partner.
  4. Upon proving your identity, you will be redirected to a new tab. Here, you enter your mobile number. If you have no linked number, it will be assigned to your Savings Account. If your number changes, it will be updated.
  5. You may get asked to reconfirm the mobile number to avoid incorrect information. Do the needful and confirm the entered data.
  6. Lastly, click on the submit button. The bank sends a one-time password to confirm the registered number. After entering the same, the procedure gets completed.

These steps are straightforward as an interactive dashboard takes you through the process. The good news is, you also get customer assistance if you get stuck. Another method to try is linking your phone number to your online Bank Account through ATM.

If you still need help after following these steps, contact your banking partner. They guide you through the process.
