The National Coalition of American Nuns (NCAN), founded in 1969, is a progressive Catholic organization that has long championed justice, equality, and reform within both the Church and society. Created by Sisters Margaret Traxler and Audrey Kopp, NCAN emerged during the spirit of Vatican II reforms and quickly became a strong voice for change.
NCAN advocates for women’s rights, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and social justice, often challenging traditional Church hierarchies and outdated doctrines. The group is especially known for its 1972 “Declaration of Independence for Women”, which called for gender equality and systemic reform.
Over the decades, NCAN has maintained a bold presence in public discourse through education, activism, and advocacy. Its members continue to inspire progressive movements within faith communities, promoting dignity, peace, and equality for all people.
